Shopaholics take note, Indianapolis is rated as one of the best shopping cities in the United States. In Forbes Magazine’s first ever rankings in this category, Indianapolis rated in the top 5 with a combination of 5,955 retail locations, 18 shopping centers and 7% sales tax. The largest mall in Indianapolis, and in the state of Indiana, is Castleton Mall which has 130 stores plus several restaurants located around the mall. It’s also interesting to note that Simon Property Group, the No. 1 shopping mall owner in the U.S., is located in Downtown Indianapolis.

Some of the major shopping centers I recommend include The Fashion Mall at Keystone (located at Keystone Crossing) and Circle Center located in the heart of downtown Indy.  Clay Terrace is also a great shopping destination because of the variety of stores available and the overall feel of being an outdoor mall. A similar outdoor mall called Hamilton Town Center located in nearby Noblesville has a similar selection of stores, with the addition of a movie theatre. If you are looking for major savings on merchandise from major retail stores, you might want to take a 45 minute drive to Edinburgh Premium Outlets, located 34 miles south of Indianapolis.

Below are Forbes Magazine rankings of America’s 25 Best Cities for Shopping some of the rankings plus the sales tax rate (Forbes based its rankings by taking into consideration the number of retail locations, number of shopping centers, affordability and overall variety of stores).
