I went to play volleyball last night at the Monon Center in Carmel. Although I haven’t really checked out too many gyms in Indianapolis, it’s probably one of the nicest gyms around.
There is drop-in volleyball (or as they say here, “open volleyball”) on Tuesday and Friday nights at 7 pm and on Sunday mornings from 9:30-12:30. All skill levels are welcome. Most people who play volleyball play at an intermediate level. There is one court set up for volleyball. The number of teams depends on the number of people who show up. Usually, there are about 18 people who show up and three teams are formed for the day. In this case, games are played on a rotational basis so that one team sits out while the other two teams play until one team reaches 15 points and wins by at least 2 points.
There is a good variety of people who go to volleyball. The age group ranges from mid-20s to 50s. By my guess, the average age is probably around 40-ish. Everyone is quite friendly and encouraging. However, there was some minor drama last week. One guy was exchanging words with another woman on another team. At first, I thought that they were kidding around, but then I realized the fight was on. Aside from this, volleyball was pretty fun.
